ERL celebrates 20 Successful Years in Business

A Few Words from the Principals

As we celebrate our 20th successful year in business, we’d like to say a few words. Since four of us, Richard Atkins, David Brandwein, Gordon Brookman, and Mitchell Wurmbrand, founded the company and first opened its doors on April 1, 1985, amazing things have happened in the world. Technology has altered the way everyone does things, the economy has gone through several cycles, and changes in world politics have affected the way we do business and lead our lives. Although Rich retired in 2000, the rest of the Principals and our wonderful staff are still here, in this great 1916 seminary building in Bloomfield, Connecticut that we moved into in 1986, and remain the hands-on, involved, and service and quality-oriented folks we’ve always been (with maybe a few more initials after some names here and there). We’ve had weddings, babies, graduations, and, probably too soon, grandchildren. We’ve also shared in the tough moments and tragic sides of each other’s lives. We want to thank our many clients who have been with us since the very beginning, the contacts who have reached out to us even as they change companies themselves, our subcontractors whom we count on for high quality work in the field and in the laboratory, our new clients who turn to us for our expertise and our level of client service, but most of all, we thank our staff for their continuing efforts to provide their best – every day – for our clients. We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you all, Gordon, David, and Mitchell

ERL Offers Vulnerability Assessments

Workplace security has become a much higher priority for facilities large and small. The threat of a terrorist attack is frightening, especially when it affects our safety, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. The necessary first step for designing security enhancements to a facility is a vulnerability study or vulnerability assessment. The purpose of such a study is to observe and analyze areas of potential vulnerability, to define causes, and to recommend means whereby exposure may be reduced or eliminated. Natural disasters and preventable accidents are also areas to be analyzed and addressed.

The vulnerability study includes three primary components: physical security, hazardous materials control and emergency response, and information systems and telecommunications. The study may also include an environmental risk assessment component.

Environmental Risk Limited (ERL) has assembled a team of experts to perform all these diverse elements of the study. ERL’s expertise is in hazardous materials control, emergency response planning, and environmental risk assessment. Our second team member is Interfor, Inc., a world leader in physical security assessment and anti-terrorism strategies for business and government agencies. Together, we can provide the full range of services required to perform the vulnerability study. Good security means good business. With an improved security program, employees feel protected, customers feel assured and business prospers.

Important Information to Safeguard Your Facility -
Be Prepared in this Changing World

Like many firms, you may be searching for responsible but reasonable steps that you can take to help safeguard your facility, your employees, and your surrounding community. We can help with several of these.

Do you have an old emergency response plan (ERP) gathering dust on a shelf. Are you now in the process of updating it? If you haven't started yet, get going. If your facility was not required to prepare an ERP, you may want to consider developing one now. We can assist you to make sure all necessary emergency steps are correct - particularly with regard to avoiding an unplanned release of chemicals.

Do you have evacuation routes planned? Practiced? Evaluated? We can assist you with this critical procedure. Different events may dictate different procedures.

Have you always thought your SARA Title III, Tier II filings were just a pain? Your local emergency responders rely on that information to be accurate and up to date. Is it current, or have you just duplicated previous year's filings every year? We can help ensure the accuracy of that information, including your site diagrams.

Have your staff received HazCom training? Or Hazardous Materials Awareness Level Training if you have hazardous materials on-site? We can provide that training so your employees recognize what to do and when to do it.

Do you have the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) on site for emergency situations? Have all appropriate staff received the required training in order to use that equipment properly? We can provide training to ensure the safe and correct use of PPE.

How Can You Get Started? Have you looked at your facility with the scrutiny of an outsider's eye to identify possible vulnerable areas regarding machinery, chemicals, equipment, and procedures? An unbiased perspective is key to ensuring that all priority systems are failsafe. We can perform a third party audit of your facility to address these concerns and make appropriate recommendations.
